 Prayers

Posted here are a variety of prayers, perhaps especially useful during the Covid-19 pandemic, or at any time.

‘Heavenly Father, Lord of all creation: We thank you for the coming of the harvest and for those who maintain the provision of food. Enable us to become better stewards of your creation, thinking always of our legacy to future generations. Mindful of the unequal burdens borne by the old and the sick in this emergency, inspire us also to be unsparing in giving ourselves in the service of our neighbour and in support of all who continue to work on the frontline in government, in hospitals and care homes, and in the community. All this we ask in the Name of your Son, the servant of all. Amen.’
— Archbishop John McDowell & Archbishop Michael Jackson, 25 Sept 2020

Almighty and All–loving God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we pray to you through Christ the Healer for those who suffer from the Coronavirus Covid–19 in Ireland and across the world.

We pray too for all who reach out to those who mourn the loss of each and every person who has died as a result of contracting the disease.

Give wisdom to policymakers, skill to healthcare professionals and researchers, comfort to everyone in distress and a sense of calm to us all in these days of uncertainty and distress.

This we ask in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord who showed compassion to the outcast, acceptance to the rejected and love to those to whom no love was shown. Amen.

— Archbishop Michael Jackson
Dublin & Glendalough

Keep watch, dear Lord, with those who work, or watch, or weep this night, and give your angels charge over those who sleep. Tend the sick, Lord Christ; give rest to the weary, bless the dying, soothe the suffering, pity the afflicted, shield the joyous; and all for your love’s sake. Amen.
— from St. Augustine of Hippo

Be present, O merciful God, and protect us through the silent hours of this night, so that we, who are wearied by the changes and chances of this fleeting world, may repose upon thy eternal changelessness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
from Compline service, Book of Common Prayer, page 161

O heavenly Father, in whom we live and move and have our being; We humbly pray thee so to guide and govern us by thy Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our daily live we may never forget thee, but remember that we are ever walking in thy sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

A prayer while putting on a mask:

Creator God,
as I prepare to go into the world,
help me to see the sacrament
in the wearing of this cloth —
let it be ‘an outward sign
of an inward grace’ —
a tangible and visible way of living
love for my neighbours,
as I love myself.

Christ, the Son,
since my lips will be covered,
uncover my heart,
that people would see my smile
in the crinkles around my eyes.
Since my voice may be muffled,
help me to speak clearly,
not only with my words,
but with all actions.

Holy Spirit,
As the elastic touches my ears,
remind me to listen carefully —
and full of care —
to all those I meet.
May this simple piece of cloth be
shield and banner,
and each breath that it holds,
be filled with your love.
In your Triune Name and
in that love,
I pray.

May it be so.
May it be so.

Almighty God, whose blessed Son went about doing good, and healing all manner of sickness; Continue, we beseech thee, this his gracious work among us, especially in the hospitals and infirmaries of our land; cheer, heal, and sanctify the sick; grant to the physicians, surgeons, and nurses wisdom and skill, sympathy and patience; and send down thy blessing on all who labour to relieve suffering and to forward thy purposes of love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
Prayer for Hospitals and Infirmaries, from Book of Common Prayer, page 146

Almighty God, Father of all mercies, we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks for all your goodness and loving-kindness to us and to all whom you have made.
We bless you for our creation, preservation, and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for your immeasurable love in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ; for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.
And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies, that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise, not only with our lips, but in our lives, by giving up our selves to your service, and by walking before you in holiness and righteousness all our days;
through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.
